Wildflowers and the Elements of Design:
Photographing the Pt. Reyes
National Seashore in Springtime
With a profusion of wildflowers covering the land, spring is an exuberant time to experience the magic of Point Reyes. Whether we focus our exploration on the columbine found under the forest canopy, fields of Douglas Iris near Limantour Beach, poppies and bog lupine at Abbotts Lagoon, or checker bloom and pussy’s ears at Chimney Rock, our perceptions of the world at our feet will be sharpened and refined.
This weekend workshop will provide an opportunity to focus on designing images that really communicate our inspirations. Photographing wildflowers is “pure fun” and Jimmy will give students advice on creating multiple exposures, zooming techniques, and help participants gain sensitivity to good wildflower light. Through a digital presentation and guided field sessions, Jimmy will also share techniques that have enabled him to work more effectively as a close-up, landscape and travel photographer. Additionally, we will explore topics such as close-up equipment, recognizing the elemental patterns of nature, how to creatively design an image while dealing with it in different kinds of light, and to simplify and unify compositions. There will also be discussion of exposure techniques and the creative use of equipment (extension tubes, lenses, filters, and reflector panels).
Our accommodations at the Clem Miller Environmental will afford us access
to all the most inspiring photographic spots of Point Reyes: Chimney Rock, McClure's Beach,
and other dynamic habitats where wildflowers, scenic vistas, and intimate patterns of nature will be revealed.
Students should have a solid working knowledge of their
camera (especially on all manual) so that group and individual
energy can be focused on the finding the gifts of springtime and the refinement
of personal expression through composition.
Sharing our work and
getting feedback is an essential part of learning and of
opening our doors of perception. Students are encouraged to bring prints to the workshop.
Photographers of all abilities,
working in any format are welcome and should be prepared
for a hike of up to one mile round trip. Participants are responsible for their
own transportation and meals.
